Rita and I went to see The Watchmen at noon today at The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. There is really no better theater than the Alamo, so it was a real treat to be able the see The Watchmen there. Rita and I got there 45 minutes early and there was already a line, but it wasn’t too long. The Alamo had some custom artwork hanging up in the lobby.
There were some great previews before the movie (trailers). I had scene the Wolverine trailer online but it was nice to see on the big screen, and there was a great new Start Trek trailer. I have a feeling that movie is going to rock.
The Watchmen was great. The visual style was really true to the book. You could tell Dave Gibbons was a consultant on the movie. The plot of the movie was exactly that of the book with many scenes and dialogue directly from the pen of Alan Moore. The story was basically the same, with a few things removed for time. For example, the entire pirate comic sub-story was removed which made sense. And I will tell you that they used the same basic ending, but I think they actually improved the details of the ending compared with that in the graphic novel.
For those that have read the graphic I think you will be very happy with the movie. Those that have not will need to pay attention to the details as the movie progresses. It looks good, has a nice style, they spend time to establish some flavor but the story still moves at a nice pace.
