The Singularity Is Near, Really

I read an excellent book a couple of years ago called The Singularity Is Near by uber-genius Ray Kurzweil.  In it, Kurzweil paints a future only a decade or two away full of artificial intelligence, technological abundance, and virtual immortality.  The turning point from our current civilization to this new technological utopia is called The Singularity by Kuerzweil and many other big thinkers.  It would all seem like science fiction, but Kurzweil as a remarkable record of predicting technology trends and inventions years in advance, and is a pioneer in several AI related fields.

This month IEEE Spectrum is running a special issue dedicated to The Singularity.   I have only made it through a couple of articles, but I am impressed with what I have read.  IEEE Spectrum is obviously going to tackle the issue from an engineering standpoint, which means reality meets hard science fiction.
